Readers Profile
I ebb and flow with my book reading. Sometimes I can't have enough books checked out of my library or loaded on my phone and then there are months that I read very little or it takes several renewals to get a book finished. My preference of book choices are fairly haphazard as well. I try to tune into my reading mood, am I ready to focus on a book or do I just need a gentle read to help me relax and unwind from the day to day of life.
While working in an international school library I was reading a lot of children's literature and young adult. I felt it was important to know what titles we had in the library and to be up to speed on new books for emerging chapter readers as well as tweens. I found I loved reading their books and it was it made it easier for me to help guide them to broaden their horizons. After working and or studying all day as well as raising a family- these were easy gentle reads for me to relax with too.
I also love audio books when I am driving. We find family friendly books for road trips and then I enjoy listening to my own books when I am chasing kids to all their sporting events. Audio books allow me to 'read' some books that I am really interested in, but don't have the energy to at the end of the day. My most recent and favorite was Night Circus.
I am a huge fan of CJ Box books. They are set in Wyoming and now some in Montana, both states that I know intimately and I think that was the initial draw. They are fast paced mysteries, but easy to read. I feel like I have developed a relationship with the characters and I want to keep up with their lives. Sometimes I want a romance from Nora Roberts or Danielle Steele. I also enjoy the complexities of Celeste Ng books, the mystery of Jane Harper and other recent intriguing reads include The Life She was Given, The Tattooist of Auschwitz, Circling the Sun and The Girl with all the Gifts. Although I found The Girl with All the Gifts very intense and haven't been able to read The Boy on the Bridge. I have a tendency to shy away from fantasy and dystopian books. My daughter on the other hand loves these genres so I try to work a few into my reading list. A Portuguese friend gave me the book Blindness, written by her favorite author Vintage Saramago. I feel like I would get more out of that particular book if I reread it now a couple months later.
I was in a reading rut a few weeks ago and had the feeling that couldn't find anything to read while standing in the library surrounded by books. I am looking forward to going out of my reading boundaries to find some new great reads!

Hi Jennifer!
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing your reading preferences. I also go through periods where I either am reading during any spare time I have or go days without picking up a book. It is always one or the other, never a happy medium haha. One of our librarians where I work swears by audio books. She often says that is the only way she can actually get things read with her busy schedule. I have yet to try an audio book but I need to.I am a little concerned that I will get to wrapped up in a story and then I'll miss a turn or something. Even though I often promote playaways to patrons because I think they are a great option for people who want to multi-task (among other reasons), I have yet to check one out. I suppose I need to listen to my own advice!
I can only read audio books when I am driving- I wouldn't get any housework done if I listened to it at home. :) I do get wrapped up in them and so when the family is in the car we have to pause everyonce and a while- I can't stand it when they talk over the book!
DeleteHello, Jennifer!
ReplyDeleteI can definitely relate to your "reading rut". Sometimes I kick it into overdrive and read an entire book in a day or a week, but then other times I won't see the middle page of a book for months on end. It's difficult considering we need a good amount of time to read. I, unfortunately, can't relax with a book - I need to be completely mentally engaged! I'd rather take a nap if I'd like to relax.
I recommend audio books - I use Youtube audiobook uploads or binge on my free Audible trial. I used it when washing the dishes, other chores, etc.
Great post!
Sara
Our reading patterns sound incredibly similar! Sometimes its all I want to to do other times its almost like a chore! This is the second post I have come across in our class that mentioned the Night Circus and now I feel inclined to check it out! I enjoy traveling too just not for long periods of time I like coming home. I am with Sara I need to be engaged in a book while reading is relaxing for me I would rather take a nap to relax.
